The Theme of True Love in A Midsummer Nights Dream by...

The Theme of True Love in A Midsummer Nights Dream by William Shakespeare The overriding theme of the play A Midsummer Nights Dream by William Shakespeare deals with the nature of love. Though true love seems to be held up as an ideal, false love is mostly what we are shown. Underneath his frantic comedy, Shakespeare seems to be asking the questions all lovers ask in the midst of their confusion: How do we know when love is real? How can we trust ourselves that love is real when we are so easily swayed by passion and romantic conventions? Some readers may sense bitterness behind the comedy, but will probably also recognize the truth behind Shakespeares satire. Often, love leads us down blind alleys and makes us do things we†¦show more content†¦Not that he is truly malevolent, but his tricks make people uncomfortable. With his quickness, ventriloquism, and shape-changing ability, he clearly has magic fairy powers of his own. Meddling in the affairs of lovers and administering Cupids love juice, clearly presents Shakespeares views on the nature of love. Pucks mischievous ways may allow him to meddle within the affairs of the lovers, however, does this interference do more harm than good? This scene begins with Oberon encountering Puck in the middle of the woods. Puck, very excited, explains his actions. He tells Oberon how he caused Titania to fall in love with Bottom, who now has a donkey head. Puck also tells him that the Athenians had been placed under the spell causing them to fall magically in love. Oberon is very pleased with Pucks efforts, and agrees that the situation turned out better than expected. However, Oberon soon realizes Puck had made a mistake by causing the Athenian to fall in love with the wrong person. Oberon admonishes Puck for his mistake. Business Ethical Issues in International Business-Free Samples

Question: What Is The Difference Business Ethical Issues In International Business-Free Samples? Answer: Introduction Business Ethical issues have been talked about ever since the ancient days. An ethical issue, therefore, represents aspects of individual human activities as well as behaviors depicted towards people living around a particular business environment. These people living in these business environments always evaluates behaviors, whether good or bad and this forms part of the relationship between them and the entire society surrounding it. Hence ethical issues are defined in the form of a mental process that is always developed in enabling someone to give difference on ways some things have been done and how they ought to be done in the best way. This will enhance the behavioral change due to the education on the right way of doing things. Today's consumers have a kind of particular taste where they prefer those organizations that have this kind of upright habit that they will always feel secure in the products that they consume from this organization to be of decent quality(Cheeseman, 2016). The media on the other end is also working day and night in putting into light organizations that are known to have a kind of office malpractices in the form of corruption or producing products that do not meet the desire and demands of the buyers. It is therefore important for the government to allow responsible media freedom as the media is very resourceful in giving the public the desire of choice through public awareness(George, 1999). According to Stan wick, "Business Ethics is the study of business situations, activities and decisions where issues of right and wrong are addressed (Stan wick, 2009, p.5)." Ethics, therefore, sets standards in deciding what is good and what is wrong. Ethical issues become an action of concern when an individual does an act that could either be harmful or beneficial to others. Law can, therefore, be codified where values and standards are drafted into a legal aspect and enforceable in courts of law. Such law includes aspects like payment of premiums by corporate companies and attaining various licenses for operating some particular business(Kline, 2010). Ethical Issues in the International Business Ethical issues in the international markets always originate mostly due to the differences in the political systems and laws operating in these nations as they tend to vary significantly from one state to the other. What is usually considered as an ethical practice in a particular state may be seen to be unethical in another country. Managers operating in foreign countries should, therefore, be vigilant in ensuring that they do not go against the ethical practices of the country they are operating their business(Sullivan, 2003.). The major issues relating to ethical behaviors includes; corruption, employment activities, environmental pollution, human rights and moral obligations in these multinational companies. We will, therefore, discuss each of this in detail. Corruption Corruption has continued to be a major burden in every community. Even today corruption is still reported to be high in most countries both developing and developed countries. Governmental organizations are known to be the highest corrupt institutions swindling all the taxpayers' money and giving nothing totally in return. The international business should, therefore, work in a different way in ensuring that their systems are not affected by corruption. However, others have gained a lot in engaging themselves in corrupt deals with government officials to operate their businesses in these markets(Megone Robinson, 2003). A major case example was that of Carl Ketchikan who gave out 12.5 million as a bribe to government officials to be allowed to get an order for the TriStar jet. When the US noticed this act, Carl was charged with bribery and tax violation(Conklin, 2006). These payments could most probably not be wrong in Japan but were unacceptable in U.S. These officials who violated the law were charged for committing a criminal offense, and one of them ended up committing suicide. In 1997 the Lock head case lead to the formation of the "Foreign Corrupt Practice Act, 1997". This act went against the act of paying foreign officials money to gain business. A lot of theories were discussed in the advantages and the disadvantages of this Act and how they could be ignored in ensuring that projects have to be initiated in these countries where officials would ask for payment or speed money to enable a foreign firm to be established in a foreign company. While this sometimes may be seen to be bad, it could also be good if the project is going to be beneficial to the people regarding job creation and facilitating the growth of a country(Snoeyenbos, et al., 1992.). A study was conducted stating the connection between economic growth and corruption. The results were however that corruption impacted so negatively towards the growth rate of a country. Corruption in allowing enterprises to operate led to the reduction of earned profits hence lowering the rate of investment in a country. There is situation where ethical dilemma may arise in this case where corruption is bad, and it may bring harm to the country, but payment in the form of speed money sometimes could be beneficial to the country as it helps in reducing barriers in investing in a country hence creating jobs for its citizens(Sharp, 2006). Environmental pollution Many developed countries have developed regulations governing pollution on the emission of toxic chemicals into its environment and the dumping of waste materials. Ethical issues, therefore, come up when one person from another country is supposed to behave in connection to environmental pollution in foreign lands in that they have to come up with ethical issues governing pollution in these new environments(Bowie, 2013). Developing nations are mostly not strict on these regulations compared to the developed countries hence resulting in cases of reported pollution by multinational companies. A major example is the case of Nigeria where a foreign oil company, this is the 1992 report by environmental activists(Cavusgil, et al., 2015). Most multinational companies, therefore, prefer developing their companies in this developed countries as there are no costly controls on pollution as compared to these developed countries and they are therefore free to pollute the environment and endangering the lives of its people. A major challenge, therefore, is of the local authority in deciding between allowing pollution and gaining an economic advantage? What is the ethical stand between these two issues? The best solution to all this issue, therefore, is ensuring that pollution is minimized. The environment is very vital, polluting one part of the atmosphere pollutes the entire and polluting the oceans from one end pollutes the entire ocean. The ocean and atmosphere are viewed as for the benefit of the global common. When pollution takes place it, therefore, becomes a "tragedy of the common." The phenomenon was first described in the 16th century by Gareth Hardin as he described a situation where a large open are was given to all to grace their cattle both for the poor and the rich. The final results were very devastating as it led to overgrazing hence destruction of the commons(James, 2012). Moral Obligations Due to their financial ability and their ability to establish themselves in foreign markets, Multinational corporations have a big responsibility in ensuring that they maintain social responsibility in these countries that they operate their business(George, 1993). This is by ensuring that they support community activities. Philosophers argue in that with this kind of power pastored to the multinational companies; they have to give back to the society in return towards their ability to grow and prosper. A successful business has the reasons to appreciate their nobles oblige and give something back in return for their success. Noble Oblige means honoring the chance you have been given(Francis Murfey, 2016). However, most multinational companies have come up to enhance their private gains at the expense of the lives of its community. The famous case of British East India Company established in the year 1600, because of its power it ended up dominating the entire Indian continent. Employment Issues The major concern in operating in the foreign market will most usually be standards set in ensuring that the foreign industries can utilize the available local skills and talents rather than import their labor. Worker protection should also be put into consideration and making sure that the environment they are working in is favorable to the. There should also be a direct relationship between the kind of work they do and the pay they receive. The maximum working time should also be set and ensuring that people are not overworked(George, 2014). Human Rights Apart from Pollution, employment equality, and social responsibility. Issues of human rights could also come up in the international business. Rights are in many forms, but the major rights will include: freedom of speech, association, assembly, movement and also freedom of political representation. All this are rights that are not supposed to be denied to any single individual in a free country governed by law. During the colonial period in South Africa, the blacks were never given a chance to rule over the white. The blacks were therefore placed in the lower positions and could not go into their managerial positions. Some occupations were therefore also set to for the blacks and could not be done by the whites. This continued until 1980's when the people started questioning this act. This was therefore unethical and against human rights in treating citizens unequally and assigning they work that is it defined as slavery. In Nigeria, the foreign oil producing companies were so uneth ical and practiced a kind of dictatorship on its citizens wherein 1990, MPF about 80 people were killed in a bloody battle between protesting people and these international companies. Some much more human rights violation cases have been reported in these developing countries, and hence this has been evaluated as going against the human rights(Parboteeah, 2013). Ethical dilemmas What is seen as being unethical in one country may not be viewed in the same way in other countries? The international companies have an obligation in ensuring that human rights of its citizens are taken care of, job equality, protecting the environment against pollution and promoting social responsibility in their business surroundings. In the U.S death penalty is allowed while in other nations this is against human dignity. Managers must at times also confront some dilemma issues. You imagine of a 12-year-old girl who is an orphan who has been given a job to work on a company's floor. However, the child is a minor and these results in the violation of the company's ethical code, and the company is charged with child labor. The child is relieved of his duty, and he is unable to get another job and result in engaging herself in prostitution to fend for her family in taking care of her 6-year-old brother. Within the next two years, the girl was reported dead of AIDS, and a big dilemma arises on how this issue could have been handled better without destroying the life of this minor and at the same time not going against the countries' ethical practice(George, 2015). Conclusion Multinational companies are therefore required to ensure that they practice ethical issues in the markets that they operate. They must be aware of the different laws and practices that are available in different countries. Most countries vary by the kind of human rights laws, pollution laws, corruption laws hence the need to take note and work towards the interest of the nation's citizens(Kline, 2010). A case such as bribery and treatments of workers are very critical in most parts of the developed countries and should also be implemented when investing in the foreign country. These multinational companies should also be responsible for enhancing social responsibility and contributing toward the growth of the nation by not avoiding tax. They should also make sure that they do not interfere with public policies, elections or government operations abroad. With all these put into consideration then a better business environment will be establ. References Bowie, N. E., 2013. Ethical Theory and Business. Boston: Pearson Education. American healthcare system Essay Example

American healthcare system Essay Example American healthcare system Paper American healthcare system Paper American healthcare system is the most expensive in the world. Sad, but true. Average expenditures for health care is about $5,540 per capita – much more than in other countries. Two different groups of Americans has different attitude to these money: sick persons want pay less and health care providers want earn more. A recent WHO survey ranked the United States as th 37th in overall health system performance. USA has honorous place between Costa Rica and Slovenia. Why? Everebody knows that the United States spends more on health care (13.7% of GDP) than any another nation. But Americans are the most dissatisfied with the quality of health care. Only 40% of Americans think that their national health care system is good. 80% Americans say the health care system needs major changes or a complete rebuilding. At the beginning of the new millenium there were more than 38 million uninsured adult Americans. In addition to the lack of health insurance among nearly 15% of the population of the United States, there are major economic and racial and ethnic disparities among uncovered persons. Nearly two thirds of the uninsured come from low-income families, and nearly three quarters of these individuals are from families with at least one full-time worker. The worse situation we have with accessibilty of health care for Hispanics. Official commentary from White House: â€Å"Many Americans enjoy access to good choices in employer-sponsored health care plans, but many others do not have good coverage options or are in danger of losing them.† President team proposed some approaches to the reform: â€Å"patient-centered health care through coverage thet you choose†, â€Å"improving the health care system by creating an environmnet thet encourages and rewards quality† and â€Å"effective support to strengthen the health care safety net and increase biomedical research†. Commentary â€Å"from the streets† (David Baron’s homepage): â€Å"I consider our current health care system to be a restricted market. By this I mean that the insurance industry is a group of profit-seeking firms, but consumers do not have free choice to switch between the market alternatives. Many of the people who defend the current system claim that a free market is best. However our current system is not a free market. Many of the problems in our current health care system are a result of the restrictions in this market. Consumers cannot register their discontent with their insurance plans because it is difficult to switch plans. Because of this difficulty, plans can fail to provide quick resolution of claims, good information, or consistent policy because customers are tied in to their current plans through their employers and through the difficulty of switching plans. Considering our current system of a restricted market, one of the simplest solutions to this problem would be to have a free market for health insurance, so that people could â€Å"vote with their feet.† Citation from Insurance Journal â€Å"The poll found that 84 percent of likely Illinois voters characterize the current state of Illinois medical liability system as a crisis or major problem, and more than three-quarters (77 percent) think the system needs major changes or a complete overhaul. More than two-thirds (68 percent) of those surveyed rate dealing with the impact of high medical liability insurance rates on health care as an extremely important issue for the Governor and state legislature to address. And 62 percent reportedly say they would be more likely to support their state legislator in this falls elections if their lawmaker voted for comprehensive reform†. So the problems on the federal and state level are the same. There are several problems in the medical insurance, inluding increase of the number of uninsured people, aging of population which will put enormous stresses on the pension and Medicare system. American insurance system need to evolve into a more sensible strategy over time†. Americans are very inpatient nation. Were very keen on new technology and procedures, and we dont have to want to wait for them or have to travel long distances. Probably, we will always spend substantially more relative to our Gross National Product than other countries. We have inequality in access to health care. There is the different attitude toward government that exists around the country. Some of the lower middle class probably are at the most risk. They may not have insurance or their insurance may not be as complete and theyre not easily eligible for assistance. Thats probably the biggest problem, the lower-middle income working uninsured population or maybe even underinsured population. An administrator of Centers for Medicare Medicaid Services, Thomas A. Scully used more strong words: â€Å"We spend billions of dollars, and we have no idea where its going. We make multi-billion-dollar mistakes.† He says â€Å"I had three goals coming into the job. One was to shake up HCFA for the better and make it much more transparent and more consumer-responsive. Secondly, I want to make the program more understandable and responsive to seniors. I think the whole health care system is much more responsive when beneficiaries know what theyre getting and they have information about quality.Third, I really want to get Medicare reform done, and Id also like to do something about the uninsured†. In his article published in the American Journal of Public Health (2003) Dr. Mohammad Akhter wrote   about advocacy of the development of universal health care system. Their approach is based on a single-payer mechanism. But Akhter considers â€Å"that a good alternative to the single-payer system that is based on incremental extension of existing coverage mechanisms, accompanied by fundamental reform of the health care delivery system. This approach is in keeping with the traditional methods of policy development in the United States, and I urge APHA to assume leadership in advocating it.† Another professional, professor Dennis G. Shea speak about three different approah in health care reform. The first one â€Å"would advocate using resources to develop systems, both public and private, for coordinating and organizing care†. Its goal to avoid errors that compromise the quality of care, duplication of efforts and espenditures, to increase responsiveness. Another approach â€Å"puts patients more at the center of their care, making them partners, as much as patients†. It means that people should be personally responsible for their health. The third approach â€Å"emphasizes that a basic commitment to care for all should be the primary value in our health system†. â€Å"This would require a redistribution of funds from those who are well-off to others to accomplish the goal. The increased governmental involvement could actually increase costs, create shortages and waiting lists, and reduce quality†. The President of National Coalition on Health Care, Henry Simmons, a physician, said: The main point I want to leave with you is that the crisis we face cannot be resolved by our present strategies or with the patchwork efforts of the past. Neither can it be resolved by dealing with only one or several of the problems we face. Resolution will require comprehensive health system reform. Health providers consider Medicaid and Medicare to be the most efficient health plans today. And they tell that the private sector insurance BIG BUSINESSES are inefficient, and charge outrageous premiums to their customers while decreasing benefits and reimbursements. CIGNA, United Healthcare, BC/BS, Medcost, Aetna and other companies are the major cause for our health care crisis. They should be eliminated and replaced with one universal plan. How was that perception shaped by the purchasers of health care? Customer hopes for better. They see that Americans who cant afford to pay huge medical bills usually get treatment anyway, through a mixture of private and public charity. But this happens only after treatments are delayed, families are driven into bankruptcy and insurers spend billions trying not to provide care. People think that we need an universal health paln for all Americans. Health coverage should be a right, not a privilege. Old and New Friends essays

Old and New Friends essays Last year my life changed dramatically. Towards the end of the school year I was starting to get the feeling my friends didnt want me around. At first I was denying it and kept going on as I usually do. Some of my friends in the group had been slowly starting to ignore my calls and texts and I believed them when they said they never got them. Eventually it got to a point where we would make plans in school then later that day I wouldnt hear from them. One of the very last times my friends and I had plans was also the day we almost completely stopped talking. At this point only a couple of my friends had been answering my calls and one of them told me to meet them at a friends house. The other kids there didnt want me to show up so when I got there they wouldnt answer my calls. When I walked down to the basement door it was locked and I saw them all standing there. I watched as they ran up the stairs and at the same time I walked to the front yard. As I called out to them I heard the sound of cars starting and watched all but two of my friends drive away. Chris and Cooper, the ones that stayed behind, had apologized for the others but at that point I had got the message and just went home. I felt betrayed and didnt understand why they were doing this. I felt alone and that the rest of the summer would be spent sitting at home feeling sorry for myself. I really didnt interact that much with many people outside of my group of friends so I felt scared that I could be without friends forever. A couple weeks later I called up my old friend Alex for a ride to the Crimson baseball game and he picked me up. As I stepped into the car I saw it full of people I didnt talk to and felt incredibly awkward as they just stared confused as why I was there. Slowly throughout the game, I started talking with them and I started to feel like I had been friends with them my whole life. After that I wa...

Definition The movie Enchanted, which is directed by Kevin Lima, not only entertains the audience with laughter and romance, but also takes them on an exotic fantasy ride. With its attributes of romance and comedy, the movie can be truly called a romantic/screwball comedy. In conventional way, screwball comedy is defined as â€Å"a distinct genre of film comedy which lampoons on the private lives of members of the upper class† (Laham 25). In earlier days, the aim behind making screwba ll comedy films was to excite the audience by â€Å"thrusting the main characters of those movies into improbable and embarrassing romantic complications which belie their status as dignified and respected members of the upper class† (Laham 25). It is clear from the definition that a screwball comedy has elements of both romance and comedy. If we go by this definition, then the movie Enchanted has all the attributes of the screwball comedy genre. Moreover, according to communication studies professor Robert Miller, the fantasy that is shown in the screwball comedy makes the audience to forget their ‘real world,’ which is usually harsh, and make them believe in the movie’s message that life should be fun (Laham 25). This opinion can be experienced completely through the movie Enchanted. The movie is not only filled with romance and comedy but is full of magical happenings and twists. One can find almost all the genre requirements of romantic/screwball comed y, like fantasy, romantic triangle, music and songs, social class conflict etc., in the movie. Romantic/screwball comedy attributes There are innumerable attributes in the movie which can be called as romantic/screwball comedy attributes. Right from the loving characters, story line, romantic base and musical theme, everything in the movie symbolizes love, joy, happiness and fantasy. However, the most important attribute of the movie is the journey of the characters from the world of fantasy to the world of reality, which is portrayed through transition of characters from animation world to the real world. Transition of characters In the movie Enchanted, some of the lead characters are shown being forced from a land in animated world (called Andalasia) to the world of ‘reality,’ the New York City. This transition has proved to be one of the most interesting attribute of a romantic/screwball comedy. The lead character of the movie, Giselle, her romantic interest Prince E dward, Nanthaniel, Pip and Queen Narissa are shown transiting from the animation world (Andalasia) to the New York City. Their efforts to keep up with the customs and manners of real world are a great delight to watch. For example, when Giselle finds herself on the Times Square after being pushed by Narissa, she creates lot of flutter on the street. Her wedding dress creates a lot of problem for her as she dashes almost everyone with her dress while walking on the foot path. This causes a lot of laughter.
